Many people have tried to convince me that religion, particularly the Christian sects, have a net positive impact on people’s lives. They cite all the charitable works people perform that are, for better or worse, motivated by religion. I hold that these same works could be motivated solely by a respect and love for mankind, and that the misery and misanthropy inherent in Christianity is unnecessary baggage.
All that aside though, one thing I’m sure the guy in the funny hat could do to improve the lot of humanity: use the bully pulpit provided by that whole ‘infallible word of God’ thing to tell his adherents that there is a place in heaven for those who use their goddamn turn signals. Just think of what a better place the world would be if a billion SUV-driving Catholics weren’t unexpectedly jumping on their brakes.
It wouldn’t make up for burning the Library of Alexandria or teaching generations of children that they are indelibly marked by some ineffable sin, but it’d be a better start than molesting choirboys. Wouldn’t Peter be pleased?
